Image The New York Institute of Photography, established in 1910, is the world's oldest and largest photography school. The Institute began as a residential program, but has offered home study training since 1922. In 1975 NYI became exclusively a distance education program. At NYI, we stress complete photography training: in addition to the art of taking great photographs, we offer thorough training in business techniques and photo technology.

Tom Cavalieri is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts with degrees in both art education and illustration. He began his career as an illustrator, and became interested in digital media when he diverged from traditional illustration techniques and started creating photo collages. Tom found digital photography to be the quickest, most immediate way of capturing the images he wanted. He became an expert in Photoshop, using it both as a means to correct imperfections in photographs and to combine images in different ways for mixed media art projects. His specialty is in portrait photography, both of humans and animals.

You can see some of Tom's photographs on his Web site –www.tomcavalieri.com.

Being the Dean of the world's largest and oldest photography school presents a lot of challenges, but Chuck DeLaney, who has held the post since 1985, steadfastly maintains, "It's the best job in the world!" He feels that way because he has the opportunity to oversee the training of thousands of aspiring photographers, create photo training materials for them, and basically think, talk, and read about photography all day long. Plus, he gets to look at lots and lots of photographs - and also, upon occasion, take them.

Misty Rice’s interest in photography started in childhood when she became fascinated with the sound of her father’s camera shutter clicking. She was thus inspired to take photography classes in high school, which started her lifelong passion for photography. After receiving her BFA, she began teaching and traveling through the United States and Western Europe. She took her camera along to document her experiences, “as a means of freezing a moment in time.” Misty taught traditional photography, developing, and printmaking at the Leysin American School in Switzerland, then moved to London and became a hand printer for a photographic lab where she soon received a promotion to managing director. After her time in Europe, Misty decided to move to New York to pursue photography professionally. Misty has experience in portraiture, fashion, and product photography and currently takes portraits of models and actors.
