Recently, we caught up with sports photographer Ben Shyman to hear about his success with football photography. Ben’s hard work and dedication to his craft with his alma mater ultimately landed him the dream job: game day access to the NFL, where he’s worked as a professional photographer for both the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers.

In this first part of the interview, Ben tells us his own story of how he got his foot in the door to industry. He sheds some light on what to do – and what not to do – to get started in such a highly competitive and fast-paced field. Although much of what Ben discusses pertains to football, his approach as a photographer could be applied to most sports photography.

In part two, we examine some of Ben’s favorite photographs that he took shooting for the NY Giants. Here, Ben discusses his techniques used to achieve top caliber shots, and as in part 1, many of Ben’s insights could be applied to other types of sports photography.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in this photo challenge! We saw some great images. Amazing how much detail you can see when you carefully look at something closely.

Below are the entries for Rachel Kuehn, Angela Blanco, Michelle Milliman. It was a tough decision for us, but in the end, we decided to reward Michelle Milliman for her stacked quarters with toad.

NYI recently held a photo challenge on its forums (forum.nyip.com), and asked students to submit their best pictures of dogs. The results were impressive to say the least, with several pages filled with photographs of dogs of all shapes and sizes, in a variety of poses.

As part of our on-going effort to always improve the student experience, we contacted several students who had submitted to this challenge asking if we might be able to use their images for this podcast. The response was unanimous: of course!

The end result was enough discussion to fill an entire series on dog photography alone. We’ve decided to condense this into two podcasts for now, but would like to continue moving forward with future Forum Challenges. This podcast is the second part of our podcast discussion. You can check out the original discussion here.

Just to reiterate: due to some technical setbacks, the quality of the audio is a little uneven at times, and you may notice a little bit of echo and noise in the recording. We should have this issue corrected for our next series of podcasts. Also, please be aware we are now recording podcasts at NYI tower in Manhattan, NY, and if you listen closely, you might even hear the occasional siren and car honking in the background as well.

Watch this Podcast as an Audio Slideshow

We are now offering enhanced podcasts in our Audio Slideshow format that synchronizes images with the podcast. As the podcast plays, images will automatically change to follow the podcast discussion.
